History
Monson Lake State Park was established in 1923 as a memorial to the members of the Broberg and Lundborg families who died in the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. On August 20th of that year, Dakota Indians attacked a group of Pioneers in the West Lake Settlement, and 13 people were killed. Anna Stina Broberg, then 16 years old, and her cousin Peter Broberg, were the only two survivors of the attack. 2012 marked 150 years since the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. Monson Lake State Park was an important location during this time. Find out how to learn more.

Geology
The park lies within the Alexandria Glacial Moraine Complex which was laid down by glaciers more than 30,000 years ago. The rocks, sand, and gravel left by the last glacier make up the drift which formed the rest of the landscape. Monson and Sunburg Lakes were formed by melting ice in the glacial till.

Landscape
The park consists of 346 acres on Monson and Sunburg Lakes. Upland lowland hardwoods, remnants of prairie, and the shoreline of Monson Lake provide examples of flora and fauna native to this area. The forests of Monson Lake are predominately oak, ash, and basswood.

Monson Lake SP is pretty small and you drive on a dirt road to get there. It's pretty much just a little campground with lake access. When we stopped in there was nobody working the office. The campsites seem pretty nice though with lots of trees.

We stayed at this campground for 2 nights. Our site was large, but overgrown. There was no one there to clean bathrooms, and the dumpster needed attention as it was overflowing. It's sad. This could be a cute campground, but is lacking attention.
