Description

Time slips by when you visit this park of the north. Walk the Savanna Portage Trail, a historic trail traveled by fur traders, Dakota and Ojibwe Indians, and explorers more than 200 years ago. Savanna Portage State Park has 15,818 acres of rolling hills, lakes, and bogs. The Continental Divide marks the great division of water: water to the west flows into the Mississippi River; water to the east runs into Lake Superior. Visitors can hike the Continental Divide Trail and see forested vistas. During the summer, visitors enjoy swimming at Loon Lake. Bike enthusiasts can pedal on roads, or on dirt trails designated for mountain bikes. With four fishing lakes and a river, its common for anglers to catch panfish, trout and bass. Come winter, this park offers snowmobilers approximately 32 miles of trails to explore.

Wildlife
Walk the hiking trails among the oak woods and see deer, bear, skunk, wolf, moose, and coyote. The bogs of the park attract many small animals and songbirds, especially warblers. The lakes are home to migrating loons and other waterfowl.

History
Savanna means open grassland and refers to the expanse of marsh grass in the park. The park contains the historic Savanna Portage Trail that the Dakota and Ojibwe Indians, explorers and voyageurs found a challenge. The trail required a six mile portage across marsh, swamp, and forest which took an average of five days to reach the West Savanna River. Today, visitors can hike a large portion of the Savanna Portage Trail. Currently the eastern 1.6 miles of the trail is minimally maintained.

Geology
Savanna Portage contains many features which are the result of the glaciers that moved through Minnesota. The large bogs are old glacial lakes that once covered many thousands of acres of land. These old lakes are the result of water that collected behind glacial moraine deposits. These mark the greatest advance of these massive ice sheets. When the great ice melted, the glacial lake water began to seek its natural drainage. These glacial lakes helped form the Savanna River and the St. Louis River which exists today.

Landscape
Savanna Portage is a wilderness retreat. Northern hardwoods with birch, aspen and some conifers dominate the forest. Old-growth hardwoods and tamarack peat bogs provide diversity to the northern woods.

Savanna Portage is fairly remote and has lots of good tree coverage and decent privacy throughout the campground. We saw numerous deer while we were visiting. There is no playground or beach. The lake is pretty and seems to have no developments on the shores.

We have 2 young children and have been going to Savanna Portage State Park for 3 years, at least 2 times per year. This remote campground offers peace and quiet. You can listen to the loons, watch the geese fly overhead, birds, frogs, fish, swans and so much more. You can ride your bike all day, go to Loon Lake to swim or play on the playground and hike! Kids love to go to the Bog every year and see if anything has changed and enjoy riding bike until dusk. We have stayed on both loops and they are equally quiet. If you like to be in rustic outdoor camping and not an RV lot this is the place to camp. We rank this as one of our top 3 campgrounds! Did I mention the Stars are so bright, no other light to drown out the gorgeous sky!

We camped here 7/16-19/10. There actually is a nice beach and kids playground equipment at this park, but you'll need to get in your car and drive there from the campground - this park is pretty big. We did a bunch of hiking and the cool water in Loon Lake was a great way to end the day. The campground does have a play field with sandbox, volleyball net, and horseshoes and the friendly campground host has horseshoes and other equipment to check out. Nice private sites

This was a fun park to hike. The camp site we had had a shelter to store our supplies as well as fire wood stacked up for us. We were not far from the lake and this park overlooks the continental divide!

  Great Escape
Reviewed on June 19th, 2020
Savanna Portage is not a terribly busy park and it is very large, with lots of good tree coverage in the campground. The park is a great getaway from the city. Several beautiful lakes and ample hiking (we were a little disappointed with the Continental Divide view). The lakes are beautiful and undeveloped. We rented a canoe and enjoyed solitude on the water. In the campground, the water was cloudy and very rusty from one spigot, but okay from the other.
