Description

Taughannock Falls State Park's namesake waterfall is one of the outstanding natural attractions of the Northeast. Taughannock Falls plunges 215 feet past rocky cliffs that tower nearly 400 feet above the gorge. Gorge and rim trails offer spectacular views from above the falls and from below at the end of the gorge trail. Campsites and cabins overlook Cayuga Lake, with marina, boat launch and beach nearby. A multi-use trail--hiking, cross-country skiing--winds past sledding slopes and natural skating ponds. Boat Launch Site not suitable for any type of sailboat. The park also offers organized activities including tours through the Taughannock Gorge and summer concerts along the lakefront.

OK if you can tolerate small, crowded sites

Taughannock Falls is typical of NY state parks in the Finger Lakes region - cramped campgrounds with older amenities, with most sites designed for a single tent and few that can accomodate large trailers or RV's. Taughannock Falls is a sprawling park and the campground loop is off the beaten path, you will need to walk or drive along busy roads to reach the beach or the falls overlook. It is a convenient location to camp if you don't want to be too long a drive from Ithaca or from Watkins Glen, but it is not a relaxing place to chill out as the sites are mostly tiny and right up against each other and nearby road traffic can be heard frequently. The clientele over Labor Day Weekend was mostly quiet and family-oriented. The bathrooms were clean but had broken fixtures (typical of Finger Lakes region).
